Dr. James Slough Appointed to National Committee

July 13, 2007

James Slough, MD was recently appointed to the Committee on Health Policy and Practice for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). The Arthroscopy Association of North America exists to promote, encourage, support and foster the development and dissemination of knowledge of arthroscopic surgery in order to improve upon the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system.

Dr. Slough’s involvement in the AANA’s Committee on Health Policy and Practice will involve monitoring State and Federal health issues as they relate to arthroscopic surgery, educating government and private sector organizations on issues which impact the practice of arthroscopic surgery, as well developing policy recommendations concerning the practice of arthroscopic surgery.

Dr. Slough performs over 400 arthroscopies a year. Arthroscopic surgery is derived from the Greek words "arthros" (joint) and "scopos" (to look). This now refers to a surgical procedure which allows surgeons to view the inside of joints and the spaces surrounding them in order to detect and treat damaged tissue. Arthroscopy requires only small incisions; therefore, patients recover more quickly and with less post-operative pain than with open surgery. Arthroscopic surgeries are performed on many parts of the body including hand, hip, elbow, shoulder, knee and foot.
Dr. James Slough’s practice handles injuries in general orthopaedics, pediatric orthopedics, and sports medicine.
